Do a personal reflection on yourself and take time to analyze your classroom reading. 1. *How much time do I spend on reading instruction? 2. *Where does reading instruction appear in my schedule? 3. How much reading instruction does each child receive each week? 4. How much time do children spend reading extended text at an appropriate level? 5. How much time do I spend in individual conferences? in whole class instruction? 6. How many books does each child read each week? After answering these question, you will have a greater awareness of how much supported reading children do and a good idea of the amount of time you need to allocate for guided reading. You will also know where reading instruction fits into your schedule. Ask yourself... 1. Are my students doing enough reading? 2. What kinds of texts are they reading? are they too easy? too hard? or just right! 3. Do I have at least an uninterrupted hour for working with small groups in guided reading. Personal reflection - in order to help our children fall in love w/ reading we have to be readers ourselves... how much time are you spending in reading books you enjoy? Do you convey your love of reading to your students? After you have reflected on the above ideas... respond on the blog page about your reflection.

I have my ELA block in the morning from 8:30-10:30 and this includes a mini-lesson from C-Scope Language, Guided Reading, and usually a read aloud, shared writing, independent reading, or journal writing. I try to work with my low readers everyday as well as my middle level readers. I have been working with my advanced readers at least 3 times a week, but I plan to have them do literacy circles soon. I am excited about getting the balanced literacy framework set up and working in my classroom. I have a hard time keeping the other students busy so that I can work with my Guided Reading group uninterrupted. I am excited to learn more about readers workshop and other management techniques. I love to read and I read chapter books to my class throughout the year. They seem to really listen and pay attention, and even do story maps and summaries over what we read in their journals.
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying learning about Guided Reading. It is very interesting to know what other teachers are doing and how they are managing the daily five. Reading is fundamental to all learning, so it is imperative that we teach it well. Amarillo School District is very committed to training their teachers and I appreciate the opportunity to participate.
