I have in the past always had students complete teacher-assigned writing projects, but after reading about writing workshops, I am now letting the students work on projects that they want for themselves. They seem to enjoy this more.
Ditto what Sharon said. I usually assign writing topics or have my class write about the books they are reading. I am going to incorporate more interactive writing and also allow the students more freedom to choose their own writing topics.
